So me and pretty much my whole department have decided to form our own NERF league, in which we’ll buy an arsenal, meet in the forest behind one of the guy’s apartment, and make war upon one another. So the question arises… Does running around in the forest, pretending you’re a special ops unit while shooting your friends considered LARPing? What if you devise scenarios based on non-realistic events (having a group hunt down a single player armed with only… A LIGHTSABER!) ? Does that count?
The reason I ask, is because many of you may recall Bridget and my previous argument about LARPing, and I think she’s just been nice and not accused me of LARPing this time.
So, is it, or isn’t it? Have any of you done this?

Honestly, the line between LARPing and non-LARPing is pretty fine. I wouldn’t call Your NERF league LARPing unless you start giving each other ranks and start demanding that people refer to you as such. Which reminds me a co-worker who demanded that everyone call him by his IRC handle. Still, it is a find line to walk. The lightsaber scenario may count as LARPing, but since I wasn’t there, I can’t comment.
I think in the end, if you are required to wear a costume, it’s likely LARPing. If not, then it’s likely just a juvenile game like we all use to play when we were kids and not LARPing. (BTW, I’m not saying anyone is juvenile, it was just the best word I could think of to describe things, sorry if it upsets anyone)

Stumbling across this blog while looking for nerf recon pictures, I just felt I had to reply upon reading this. We’re a Star Wars LARP-group and we use just that – Nerf guns and lightsabers.
So, yes, it’s definitely LARPing – we’ve had some pretty impressive firefights, as well as several very fierce lightsaber duels. Nerf-weapons add a great dimension to the game, especially since they have broaded the range of their weaponry considerably since we started five years ago.
If you look on the Star Wars LARP website, http://www.heroesoftherepublic.nl (it’s in dutch, unfortunately), you can find pictures of our events.
