Me and my wife babysit an 8-year old kid every six days while his mom has duty (she’s Navy). Every week he comes over, plays some Star Wars Battlefront II, sometimes watches as me and my wife play Carcassone, and enjoys playing Yahtzee.
6 days ago, the last time we watched him, I decided to try something.
I pulled out my old, worn copy of the Star Wars: Invasion of Theed Adventure Game. It came out back when Wizards first got the Star Wars license, and is basically a dumbed down version of the Star Wars RPG rules, in which a small group of teenagers has to escape Theed (naturally) during the invasion of Naboo.
It basically plays like a board game, with minimal RPG connotations, other than rolling a d20 and a few other polyhedrals.
He chose Galak, a human soldier and member of Captain Panaka’s security forces. Bridget chose Arani Korden, a human scoundrel.
We played through a couple of the adventures, and I think he genuinely enjoyed it. There was lots of dice rolling, he came up with a plan of sneaking past the guards while Arani distracted them, and was surprised and excited when some battle droids showed up unexpectedly.
In all, I think it was a good introduction to the world of cooperative games. I don’t think I’ll be pulling any of my RPG books out anytime in the future, but I think he had a good time.
