So, one of the myriad of podcasts my husband listens to came on the other day and I only catch a part where they are discussing about how to teach someone to play an RPG… This is merely a preface to explain where I am coming from.
Easier said than done is the statement that applies to my early days at attempting to play an RPG. My husband tried to teach me and until recently it just didn’t seem it was going to happen. Not because I have any lack of imagination or concept visualization. On the contrary… I have too much. I was often known to destroy any intended story line that he could come up with simply because I would throw such a wrench into the plan!
My husband could not seem to keep my imagination reigned in. Therefore, when I came in and caught part of a podcast discussing that you could be, “anything you want your character to be.” Then another voice says, ”then I want to be a flying bucket”. Responded to quickly with a “no, you can’t be a flying bucket”, my imagination started spinning.
I’ll tell you what the problem was… I wanted to be the flying bucket. In the instance I heard this comedic commentary I was already formulating a plan in my head on how a flying bucket could be part of a campaign… Much to the chagrin of my hubby I told him I would be playing a flying bucket in our upcoming Forgotten Realms campaign.
Let’s see what he can do with that

B.G.
I just recently started teaching my girlfriend to play and I have become very adept at the “art of yes”. She is now playing a Druid/Rogue 1/2 with a wolf animal companion. She started out wanting to play a Druid/Ranger but she likes the idea of looting people too much. You want to play a flying bucket… sure, cool, lets roll some stats. It might be interesting to have a sentient item as a PC.
